For our February club meetings, I wanted to feature the Scoring tool. I found a wonderful tutorial on making custom boxes with the scoring tool. So......here's how to do that. Credit goes to Connie Stewart for sharing this marvelous tutorial.
The Simply Scored Scoring Tool is $29.95 and well worth the $$. It comes with a set of place markers for marking the measurements you use most of the time. And, of course, the Stylus. The grooves are 1/8" apart for easy marking of any type of card!! The first project we did was to make a custom box. Have a gift that you don't have a box for? Make your own to coordinate with your card!!
To start off, you need to make a shim for your Simply Scored Scoring Tool
- Cut a 2” x 8” piece of Window Sheet (114323, page 216)
- Score at ½” and 1 ¼” length wise.
- Burnish your score lines very well with your bone folder
- Cut a piece of card stock 1” x 8” and score at ½”
- Add sticky tape to both sides of the scoring and place this piece of card stock on the ½” side of the scored window sheet.
- Burnish your score lines again very well
Remember that you will using the shim for the TOP OF YOUR BOX only
So when you make your box, you will score the bottom of the box without the shim and add the shim to score the top of your box (this is very important as it bumps the box just a tad to make your lid fit on top of your box without buckling)
The measurements of your gift is the next step
Lay your gift on your Simply Scored Scoring Tool.
Note the length and width of your gift. I gave the club members a yard of ribbon. This measures 2 ¾” x 2 ¾”
Now measure the depth of your gift by laying it along the side of the Simply Scored Tool. The depth measures 1”
FORMULA
Length = 2 ¾”
Width = 2 ¾”
Depth = 1”
The measurement of the bottom and top of your box is:
Length + Depth (x 2)
Width + Depth (x2)
So for this project
Length = 2 ¾” + Depth (1” x 2) = 4 ¾”
Width = 2 ¾” + Depth (1” x 2) = 4 ¾”
So you need to cut your box bottom and box top 4 ¾” square
SCORING YOUR BOX TOP AND BOX BOTTOM
The next step is to score both the box bottom and box top and you will score both pieces at the measurement for the depth – or for this project 1”
TIP: When you score with your stylus that comes with the Simply Scored Scoring Tool, you use the small end of the stylus for card stock and large end for designer series paper (Reason? The small end can cut your thinner designer series paper)
You now have scored on all 4 sides at 1” (see picture above)
To score the box top, ADD THE SHIM TO THE LEFT SIDE OF YOUR SIMPLY SCORED SCORING TOOL.
Score again 1” on all 4 sides. Be careful to not slide the top under the shim. Gently rest it again the shim and score
Since the DSP is brightly colored, it’s hard to see the score lines, but they are there!
ASSEMBLING YOU BOX
The next step is to assemble your box bottom and box top
Cut up to the score line on two opposite sides on the score lines
The next step is to miter all 4 tabs, so they won’t show when your box is assembled. This is a close look at one tab. Now do the same for all 4 tabs
Your box bottom should now look like this. Do the same for the top of your box
Add Sticky Tape along the score lines on each tab
The next step is to burnish all the score lines. Then remove the red tape and attach the tabs to assemble your box
Repeat the above steps for the top of your box
I punched out a flower with the Blossom Punch (125603, page 17 Occasions Mini). You can give it some dimension by using a pencil to curl the petals
I stamped the Medium Flower in Cherry Cobbler from the Fresh Vintage Stamp Set (125115 – Sale-A-Bration Catalog page 6) and then punched it out with the Blottom Bouquet Tripel Layer punch on the first setting. I then added a Red Glimmer Brad from the Brights Collection (121006, page 199) to the center and adhered it to the top of the box with Dimensionals.
Here are some more boxes I made
This box fits 10 note card sized cards (5 ¼” x 3 ½”) and 10 envelopes. The finished measurements are
5 ¼” x 4” . I started with
Length = 5 ¼”
Width = 4”
Depth = 1 ½”
So my formula was
Length + depth x 2 5 ¼” + 3” = 8 ¼”
Width + Depth x 2 = 4” + 3” = 7”
My card stock and designer papers were cut 8 ¼” x 7”
I scored at 1 ½” on all 4 sides.
Here are some more boxes – these fit our normal 5 ½” x 4 ¼” cards
The measurements for these boxes were
Length = 5 ¾”
Width = 4 ½”
Depth = 1”
These will hold five cards and envelopes
