For the last few years we have tried to give practical gifts to our family. The gals love handmade cards and last year it was "Nuts" in a special little holder for the guys.
I just found the perfect (and inexpensive) gift for my troops this year. There is a little story which I'll share behind this.
On Monday of this week a very sad thing happened. A friend and her husband were killed in a tragic accident. They were driving on a highway. were hit and both killed. I have known them for over 25 years. They were a devoted, private couple who gave SO much to our small community. Dan was a CASA for our daughter and son-in-law's first foster baby. Madge was a Speech Pathologist in our school system and out of the goodness of her heart, spent a number of hours this last summer with our grandson tutoring him in speech. They both will be greatly missed.
To make a long story short, the car that hit them did so because the driver was avoiding another vehicle who swerved into their lane. The passenger in this car was injured and not able to communicate. On her phone there was an "ICE" sticker. The EMT's were able to identify this and call her father as her designated "ICE" contact (In Case of Emergency). Not only was her father notified immediately, but he was able to verify her medical condition with the emergency people.
This was shared on a news video and I was so impressed, I went to the ICE site (click on the word ice to open a new window and read all about it). I ordered ICE stickers for all my family and am going to give them with the instructions in the little holders I made tonight. I have printed out the instructions on card stock and have adhered them to the inside and I will put the stickers in when they come
Stamp Set: All Holidays
Card Stock: Ski Slope Designer Paper (112994 page 12 2008 Holiday Mini Catalog)
Ink: Baja Breeze
Embellishments: Baja Breeze 5/8" Striped Grosgrain Ribbon (111375, page 186), Big Felt Flurries (113698, page 18, 2008 Holiday Mini Catalog)
I cut a 7 3/4" x 7" piece of Ski Slope Designer Paper. I scored it on the 7" side at 3 1/2". I added the instructions on the left inside and will put the ICE sticker on the right inside.
If you click on "Marketing Tools" on the ICE site in the left margin and then on Ice Your Phone Brochure, you can print out the instructions three to a page. I cut them down to fit the above measurements.
If this will save just one person's life, it's well worth the time and effort.
Thank you for your articles, these families practical gift is great:) maybe I'll consider it

Jan,
This is an awesome idea! I heard about that couple and wondered if you knew them. I think I just might stamp lift your idea for my family and friends, also.
BIG HUGS,
